Why Dubai visas get rejected

Neither GDRFA nor ICP publishes a list of refusal reasons. Their service pages set conditions instead, and a file that misses one comes back or is turned down.

No official page lists Dubai visa rejection reasons. GDRFA and ICP publish conditions instead, and a file that misses one is sent back or refused. The usual causes are a photo that fails the ICAO rule, a passport with under 6 months left, a sponsor salary below the ICP tier, missing documents, and a record on your name, such as an unpaid overstay or an absconding report. Most of these you can check before you apply.

Reasons that come from the rules

The photo

ICP asks for an ICAO standard photo: recent, white background, face and eyes clear, no shadows, no hats or sunglasses. Grey walls and glare on glasses are the classic faults. A photo fault usually returns the file rather than ending it, but it still costs days. Fix it with Dubai visa photo requirements.

Passport validity

At least 6 months from the date of entry, on u.ae, ICP and the GDRFA visit pages. A passport that expires 5 months after landing fails, however good the rest of the file is.

ICP ties the sponsor's monthly salary to the relationship: AED 4,000 for parents, spouse and children, AED 8,000 for siblings, grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins, AED 15,000 for friends. A resident who earns over AED 4,000 but under AED 8,000 can host a parent but not a cousin. Emirates uses its own, different table when it files the visa.

Missing or unreadable documents

Insurance valid in the UAE and a return or onward ticket are conditions on the ICP and GDRFA tourist and visit pages. Some passports also need a national ID copy; the official pages name Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan among them. GDRFA gives 30 days to complete a file, then cancels the request.

Name mismatch

No official page we read names this as a reason. In practice a name spelled one way on the passport and another on the ticket or insurance makes a file look inconsistent. Copy the passport spelling, letter for letter, onto every document.

Previous overstay

The UAE fines visitors AED 50 for each day past their permitted stay. Fines are paid at exit or before a status change. An unpaid fine stays on the file and can block a new visa until it is settled. Our UAE overstay fine guide shows how to check and pay.

Absconding or escape report

When a sponsor files an escape report, the person goes on a circular in the administrative list. GDRFA states that a traveller must not be subject to any restriction that prevents entry to the UAE. Until the circular is lifted, a new visa is unlikely. See absconding case in the UAE.

Security and other restrictions

Security checks are not explained on any page we read, and no reason is given when they lead to a refusal. If you have been refused before with a clean file, a new application on the same facts may meet the same result.

Checklist before you apply again

  • Passport valid 6 months from your new arrival date.
  • New photo on a white background.
  • Insurance certificate naming the UAE, with your passport spelling.
  • Return or onward ticket.
  • Sponsor salary proof that meets the tier for the relationship.
  • National ID copy if your passport needs it.
  • No open fines on the GDRFA fines inquiry service.

What to do after a refusal

  1. Look up the result yourself on the GDRFA or ICP tool. The Dubai visa status check guide shows how.
  2. Ask whoever filed the visa (travel company, airline or your sponsor) what the system showed.
  3. Compare the file with the conditions above and fix what is weak.
  4. Check for overstay fines or a circular. Settle fines and ask the sponsor to lift any report.
  5. If you think the decision is wrong, note the "Reconsideration request" tab on the GDRFA status inquiry page and ask the authority how it applies to you.
  6. Reapply only once the cause is fixed, ideally through the route that suits your situation. A relative sponsor may help where a tourist visa failed, or the other way round.

Processing time on a second try

A new file gets the same listed times: 48 hours with GDRFA, 2 days with ICP. Lifting a circular through GDRFA also lists 48 hours. Allow for both when planning a trip after a refusal. See Dubai visa processing time.

Tips

  • Keep a copy of everything you sent. If a file fails, you can see what to change.
  • A parent's visit needs a far lower sponsor salary than a friend's. The Dubai family visit visa page explains the degrees.
  • Do not buy flights you cannot change until the visa is issued.

Questions people ask

Why was my Dubai visa rejected?

The authorities rarely give a reason. Check your file against the published conditions: photo to the ICAO rule, passport valid 6 months, sponsor salary, insurance, ticket, national ID copy where required, and any open fine or report on your name.

Can I reapply after a Dubai visa rejection?

No official page we read sets a waiting period before a new application. Reapplying with the same file usually gets the same answer, so find and fix the cause first.

Do I get my money back if my UAE visa is refused?

Partly at best. ICP refunds only the issuance fee; application and smart services fees are kept. Agencies and airlines keep their service charge under their own terms. A refundable guarantee comes back once the visa is cancelled or you leave without violations.

Does an old overstay stop me getting a new Dubai visa?

An unpaid overstay fine stays on your record. Fines run at AED 50 a day and must be paid before you can leave or adjust your status. Check for open fines on the GDRFA fines inquiry service before you apply again.

Can an absconding report block a UAE visit visa?

It can. An escape or absconding report puts a circular on the person's file, and GDRFA states that a traveller must not be under a restriction that stops entry. The sponsor who filed the report can ask for it to be lifted.

Is there an appeal for a refused Dubai visa?

The GDRFA status inquiry page has a 'Reconsideration request' tab. The page does not explain the conditions, so ask the authority or the company that filed your visa before you rely on it.
