UAE residence visa

A UAE residence visa lets you live here with an Emirates ID. Someone sponsors you, such as an employer, a spouse or a parent, or you sponsor yourself through property, savings, a business or a talent route.

A UAE residence visa is the permit that lets you live in the UAE, with an Emirates ID issued alongside it. You need a sponsor: an employer, a resident spouse or parent, a university, or yourself on a property, investor, retirement, green or golden route. Sponsored visas run 1, 2 or 3 years. Unsponsored ones run up to 5 or 10 years. GDRFA lists 48 hours, ICP 2 days.

People search for a "Dubai residence visa" and a "UAE residence visa" as if they were two things. They are one permit. What differs is the authority: GDRFA issues residence for a Dubai file, and ICP handles Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah.

Every residence starts with one question: who stands behind your file?

Sponsored residence Self-sponsored residence
Who applies Employer, spouse, parent, university or household employer You
Validity 1, 2 or 3 years Up to 5 or 10 years
Tied to Your job, your sponsor's visa or your studies Your own property, money, income or talent
If the link ends The sponsor cancels and a grace period starts You keep it while you meet the conditions
Can you sponsor family Yes, if your salary meets the rule Yes, on most routes

A sponsored visa is the normal case. Most residents in Dubai hold one through work. The self-sponsored routes matter when you change jobs often, run your own business, retire here or own property. The types of residence visa guide has one row for each.

The routes, one line each

If you are The route Read
Hired by a UAE company Employment residence after a MOHRE work permit Work visa in Dubai
A spouse, child or parent of a resident Family residence Family visa in Dubai
Employing a maid, nanny or driver Domestic worker residence Maid visa in Dubai
A skilled worker, freelancer or investor on your own Green residence, 5 years Green visa UAE
An investor, top earner, talent or top student Golden residence UAE golden visa
A Dubai property owner 2-year property residence Property visa Dubai
Aged 55 or over with savings, property or income Retirement residence, 5 years Retirement visa Dubai
Enrolled at a licensed university Student residence, 1 year at a time Student visa Dubai

One change many sites have missed: the Dubai Land Department now lets a sole owner apply for the 2-year property residence whatever the property is worth. The old minimum purchase price is gone. A co-owner still needs a share of at least AED 400,000.

Official fees

The two authorities split the cost into fee lines. Neither page shows one total for a full residence.

Entry permits, the medical and insurance come on top, and the golden route has a higher permit fee. All lines are set out on the residence visa cost page.

What Dubai agencies charge

Prices depend on the route, so there is no single market figure. For an employment visa, 4 Dubai setup and PRO providers publish about AED 3,500 to AED 8,000 per employee, all in. For a renewal, 4 Dubai providers publish about AED 1,100 to AED 7,000 (published prices, checked ).

Documents you will need on almost every route

  • Passport valid at least 6 months, and a photo on a white background
  • Proof of the link to your sponsor: job offer, attested marriage or birth certificate, admission letter, title deed or bank statement
  • Medical fitness result if you are 18 or over
  • Health insurance, required for Dubai residence permits
  • Emirates ID application and fingerprints

Route by route lists are on the residence visa requirements page.

Processing time

GDRFA lists 48 hours for most residence permits once the file is complete. ICP lists 2 days. The slower parts sit around that: the MOHRE work permit, the medical result, attestation of documents from abroad, or a DLD centre file of 7 to 10 business days for property owners. If you entered on a residence entry permit, ICP gives you 60 days from entry to finish.

Rules that stay with you after approval

  • The 180-day rule. More than 180 days in a row outside the UAE cancels the residence. Golden and green holders, students abroad and a few other groups are exempt. The re-entry permit page covers the way back.
  • Grace periods. After cancellation or expiry, GDRFA gives 60 days on standard residence and 180 days on green residence. Then the overstay fine is AED 50 a day.
  • Renewal before expiry. The sponsor must renew before the visa runs out. Renewing early for travel needs ICP approval.

Why residence files get held up

  • The salary on the certificate is below the family sponsor rule.
  • Foreign certificates are not attested by the UAE embassy and MOFA.
  • The medical result is missing or flagged.
  • Health insurance has lapsed or does not cover the full term.
  • The 60 days after entry ran out before the residence was stamped.

How it works with us

Send your passport copy and one line about your situation on WhatsApp, or fill in the form on this page. Say who could sponsor you, or what you hold if you want to sponsor yourself. A visa adviser checks which residence route fits and which documents are still missing. You get one total price, confirmed on WhatsApp before you pay. The team then prepares the file, books the medical and biometrics, and follows it with GDRFA or ICP until the residence and Emirates ID are issued. DubaiVisaDesk.com is a private visa service. GDRFA and ICP make every decision on a residence visa.

If a residence is refused, the authorities do not return their fees. Before you pay us, the adviser tells you in writing what part of our total, if any, you would get back.

How to get a UAE residence visa

  1. Find your sponsor

An employer, a resident relative, a university, or yourself on a property, investor, retirement, green or golden route.

  2. Get the entry permit or change status

From abroad you enter on a residence entry permit. If you are already here on a visit visa, the sponsor files a status change.

  3. Medical test and biometrics

Everyone aged 18 and above takes the medical fitness test, then gives fingerprints for the Emirates ID.

  4. Residence issued

GDRFA or ICP issues the residence and the Emirates ID follows by courier. Finish within 60 days of entry.

Good to know

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a UAE residence visa and an Emirates ID?

The residence visa is the permit that lets you live in the UAE. The Emirates ID is the identity card issued with it. They run together: the card expires when the residence expires and is cancelled when the residence is cancelled.

How long is a UAE residence visa valid?

u.ae says 1, 2 or 3 years when someone sponsors you, and up to 5 or 10 years when you hold an unsponsored visa such as the green or golden residence. Employment visas in Dubai are usually issued for 2 years.

Can I get a UAE residence visa without a job?

Yes. A spouse or parent can sponsor you, a university can sponsor you as a student, or you can qualify on your own through property, retirement savings or income, a business share, freelance income or a golden visa category.

Can I enter the UAE on a visit visa and then get residence?

Usually yes, through a status change inside the country. GDRFA and ICP add an inside the country fee of AED 500 for this. Coming in on a residence entry permit avoids that fee, and you then have 60 days to finish the residence.

What happens to my residence if I stay abroad too long?

A resident who stays outside the UAE for more than 180 days in a row loses the residence automatically. Golden and green holders and some other groups are exempt. Others must apply for an entry permit to return.

Is a Dubai residence visa different from a UAE residence visa?

It is the same UAE residence. The difference is who issues it: GDRFA for a Dubai file, ICP for Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the northern emirates. Fees and channels differ slightly between the two.
