Indian citizens get a UAE residence visa through the same routes as everyone else: an employer, a resident spouse or parent, a university, or self-sponsorship through property, retirement, green or golden residence. What is different starts in India. Certificates must be attested by Indian authorities, the UAE embassy or consulate and MOFA (AED 150 each). ECR passport holders coming to work also need emigration clearance. The residence itself takes 48 hours at GDRFA.
Once you hold it, the residence changes more than where you live. It decides how your relatives visit from India and opens a few countries to you without a visa.

Attesting Indian documents
UAE authorities accept an Indian certificate only after it has been attested. GDRFA states that all documents issued abroad must carry the UAE embassy and MOFA stamps.
The order is fixed:
- In India, the issuing authority or state department certifies the document, then the Ministry of External Affairs attests it.
- The UAE Embassy or a UAE consulate in India legalises it.
- MOFA in the UAE adds the final stamp, at AED 150 per personal document.
Which papers you need depends on the route:
- Marriage certificate, for a spouse on a family file
- Birth certificate for each child
- Degree or diploma, for a skilled work permit at MOHRE levels 1 to 4
- Graduation or study proof, for a son of 25 or over
Do the Indian steps before you leave India if you can. No official page gives a time for the Indian side, so start early.
ECR or ECNR: when India itself asks
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs requires emigration clearance only when an ECR passport holder goes to an ECR country to take up a job. The UAE is on that list. The rule is written for employment only. ECNR passports are not covered by it at all. If you are ECR and your move is not for a job, confirm with the Protector of Emigrants before you fly.

What Dubai agencies charge
Dubai firms publish about AED 500 to AED 2,000 to handle attestation of a marriage certificate from abroad, and about AED 2,000 to AED 6,500 for a spouse visa all in (published prices of Dubai firms, checked ).
What a UAE residence does for Indian travellers
An Indian passport needs a visa for most places. A UAE residence changes that in only a few countries, and only where the country says so on its own government page.

When your relatives visit from India
Your residence does not give your parents or siblings visa-free entry. India is on the UAE's visa required list, so they need a visit visa before travel. If they hold a US visa or green card, or a UK or EU residence, they can use the 14-day visa on arrival (AED 100, extendable once) or the 60-day ICP visa (AED 250 plus AED 100). Documents to bring from India
- Indian passport valid at least 6 months
- Photos on a white background
- Attested marriage and birth certificates, for family files
- Attested degree, for skilled jobs
- Emigration clearance, if ECR and coming to work
Processing time
GDRFA lists 48 hours for the entry permit and the residence, ICP 2 days. You then have 60 days from entry to finish. Attestation in India has no official timeline.
Why Indian files get stuck
- A certificate stamped by MEA but not by the UAE embassy or MOFA.
- A spelling of the name that differs between the certificate and the passport.
- An ECR passport holder flying out for a job without clearance.
- More than 180 days in India, which cancels the residence.
