Self-sponsored visa in the UAE

You can sponsor yourself in the UAE through the green visa, the golden visa, the remote work visa or the retirement visa. Each rests on its own condition, from AED 15,000 a month to AED 2,000,000 in property.

A self-sponsored visa in the UAE is a residence where you are your own sponsor. The routes are the green visa (skilled workers on AED 15,000 a month, freelancers, investors), the golden visa (AED 30,000 salary, AED 2,000,000 property or deposit, or a nomination), the remote work visa (USD 3,500 a month from abroad) and the retirement visa (age 55 and over). GDRFA issues most in 48 hours.

Self-sponsored does not mean no conditions. It means the condition is about you, not an employer. If you lose a job, the visa can stay.

How to pick between them

Start with what you can prove on paper today.

  • A UAE salary of AED 15,000 or more. Green skilled. At AED 30,000 and MOHRE level 1 or 2, golden. Our golden visa vs green visa comparison shows the trade-offs.
  • Freelance income. Green freelancer, once you hold the MOHRE permit and can show the income for two years.
  • A company or shares. Green investor at any size the licensing authority approves. Golden from AED 2,000,000 in capital, or AED 250,000 a year in federal tax.
  • Property. Golden from AED 2,000,000. For a property owner below that, the official pages we read give no threshold, so we do not quote one.
  • A salary from abroad. Remote work.
  • Aged 55 or over and retired. Retirement, with one of the financial conditions on the GDRFA retiree page. The page lists the amounts; check them there.

What Dubai agencies charge

For the free zone freelance route, Dubai firms publish about AED 11,000 to AED 16,000 for a permit plus a two-year visa (published prices of 3 Dubai firms and the GoFreelance price list, checked ). GoFreelance itself lists the licence at AED 7,500 a year, the visa at AED 4,600 for one year or AED 5,042 for two, and an establishment card at AED 2,000. For the green and remote work routes, no fair service fee range exists.

Documents most routes ask for

  • Passport valid at least 6 months and a photo
  • Proof of your condition: salary certificate, MOHRE permit and income records, trade licence, title deed, bank statements or nomination letter
  • Attested degree, for the salary and freelancer routes
  • Health insurance
  • Medical result and Emirates ID receipt in the UAE

Processing time

GDRFA states 48 hours for green, remote work and the golden salary route, and 5 days for golden investors. DLD states 7 to 10 business days for the property route. ICP states 2 days for residency issuance in the other emirates.

Grace periods differ a lot

Golden and green holders get 180 days after expiry or cancellation. The remote work and retirement pages state 60 days. If a long safety window matters to you, it is a reason to aim for green or golden.

Where self-sponsored files fail

  • Picking a route you only nearly meet, such as a salary just under AED 15,000 on the green skilled route.
  • Cancelling an employment visa before the new residence is approved.
  • Income from abroad that cannot be traced in bank records.
  • Property value or share below the line once the paperwork is checked.

How it works with us

Send your passport and a short summary of what you have: salary, freelance permit, company licence, property or age, on WhatsApp or through the form on this page. A visa adviser matches it to the route you actually clear and explains the papers you need. You get one total price before you pay. The team prepares and files the application with GDRFA, ICP or a DLD centre, books the medical and biometrics, and tracks the file. DubaiVisaDesk.com is a private visa service. The authorities decide the visa.

If the visa is refused, the government fees stay with the authorities. Before payment, the adviser tells you in writing what part of our total, if any, comes back to you.

Questions people ask

What is a self sponsored visa in the UAE?

A residence where you are your own sponsor, so no employer or family member holds your file. The main ones are the green visa, the golden visa, the remote work visa and the retirement visa. Each has its own condition: salary, income, investment, age or a nomination.

What is the cheapest self sponsored visa in Dubai?

On GDRFA's fee lines, the green, remote work and retirement residence permits each start at AED 200 plus small fees, against AED 1,100 for golden. Which one is cheapest for you depends on the route you can qualify for, and on insurance.

Can I sponsor myself without a job in the UAE?

Yes, through a route that does not need a UAE employer: green as a freelancer or investor, golden through property, a deposit or a nomination, remote work with income from abroad, or retirement if you are 55 or over and meet the financial condition.

Is a free zone freelance visa self-sponsored?

Not in the same sense as a green visa. You get the visa as part of a free zone permit package, and GDRFA has no separate freelance visa page. The official self-sponsored route for freelancers is the green visa.

Can I get a self-sponsored visa by buying property in Dubai?

Yes, with property worth at least AED 2,000,000 you can apply for the golden visa through DLD. For cheaper property, the official pages we read do not give a threshold, so check before you buy with a visa in mind.

How long does a self sponsored visa last?

Golden is 10 years, green is 5 years, retirement is 5 years and remote work is 1 year. All of them can be renewed if you still meet the condition.
