After a UAE residence visa is cancelled or expires, you have a grace period to stay without a fine. ICP sets it by category: 30, 60, 90 or 180 days. GDRFA service pages for Dubai say 60 days for most residences. Golden and green holders get 180 days. u.ae sums it up as up to 6 months. After the grace period, ICP charges AED 50 a day.
The sources do not match each other. This page puts them side by side so you can see which one applies to you.

How to read the table
If your visa was issued in Dubai, start with the GDRFA line for your category. Then check the ICP line. When they differ, plan on the shorter one. A Dubai private sector employee sees 60 days on GDRFA, and ICP's skilled worker line would give 90 days only at skill levels 1 to 3. Counting on 60 is the safe choice.
If your visa came from Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or another emirate, ICP is your authority, so its categories decide.
What it costs when you run past it
| Item | Amount | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Overstay fine, from the day after the grace period | AED 50 per day | ICP |
| Departure permit for violators | AED 200 + AED 100 smart services | ICP |
| Status adjustment inside the UAE, for a new residence | AED 500 | ICP |

The fine is not charged during the grace period. It starts the next day and keeps running until you leave or move to a new visa. The UAE overstay fine guide explains how to check and pay it.
What you can do inside the grace period
- Take a new job. The new employer applies for your permit. MOHRE allows a transfer within 90 days of the old permit's cancellation. See change job in the UAE.
- Move to a family visa. A spouse or parent who lives here can sponsor you through a status change.
- Switch to a self-sponsored visa, such as green, golden, retiree or property owner, if you meet the conditions.
- Leave the UAE. Nothing more to do once you exit before the last day.
Papers to keep
- The cancellation confirmation, with its date
- Your passport and the old residence details
- Your file number or UID, to check your status
- Proof of a new application, if you started one
Steps to work out your last day
- Find the cancellation or expiry date on your paper or on the visa status check.
- Find your category in the table.
- Pick the shorter period if GDRFA and ICP differ.
- Add the days to your date. That is your last day without a fine.
- Put it in your phone calendar, with a reminder a week before.
When the grace period starts and how long things take
The grace period starts on the date of cancellation or expiry. It does not wait for you to collect a paper. A Dubai residence cancellation takes 48 hours at GDRFA, so the date can land sooner than you expect. Ask your employer or sponsor for the exact date in writing.
Common mistakes
- Counting from your last working day. The clock starts from the cancellation date on the file.
- Assuming 6 months because u.ae says "up to". That ceiling applies to some categories only.
- Thinking a visit visa has a grace period. Official pages do not state one.
- Waiting for a new job offer until the last week. A permit transfer needs time to file.
- Forgetting the family. Dependants' cancellations have their own dates. See family visa cancellation.
Tips
- If your employer is about to cancel your visa, ask for the date before it is filed.
- Do not leave and re-enter on a visit visa to buy time without checking your status first.
- Keep the cancellation paper until your new visa is stamped.
