If you stay outside the UAE for more than 180 days in a row, your residence visa is cancelled automatically, unless you belong to an exempt group such as golden or green holders. To come back on it, you apply from abroad for an entry permit with a valid reason. u.ae lists a fine of AED 100 for every 30 days or less outside. You must enter within 30 days of approval.
People call it the re-entry permit, the return permit or the 6 months rule. It is one service.
What the 180-day rule says
u.ae's general provisions for the residence visa set it out simply. Spend more than 180 consecutive days outside the UAE and the residence is nullified. On the plain wording, the count is about days in a row. A trip back into the UAE before day 180 breaks the run.
Count the days yourself from your passport stamps or boarding passes. A status page that still says valid is not proof that you are within the limit.
Who is exempt
u.ae lists these groups as not covered by the 180-day rule:
- Foreign wives of UAE nationals
- Domestic helpers travelling with Emirati scholarship students abroad
- Patients treated abroad with medical approval
- Public sector staff on training abroad
- Students at universities outside the UAE
- Investors with valid visas
- Staff of diplomatic missions and their dependants
- Golden visa and green residence holders
For golden holders, GDRFA is more precise: there is no 180-day rule, and the permit is void only if it expires while you are outside. So the real risk for a golden holder is the expiry date, not the time away. See the golden visa hub and green visa pages.
Fees
| Line | Amount | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Fine for time outside | AED 100 for every 30 days or less | u.ae |
| Return permit fee | Not published here | Conflicting figures |
| Entry window after approval | 30 days | u.ae |

Why no permit fee? Media snippets show three different amounts, and we could not open an official GDRFA or ICP fee page for this service. Rather than guess, we leave it out. The system shows the real amount when the request is filed.
u.ae also does not say whether the AED 100 counts every 30 days you were away, or only the days past 180. Ask for the figure on your file.
Where to apply
- Dubai residence: media guides describe a GDRFA service called "Return permit for resident outside UAE more than 6 months". Check the GDRFA site for the current version before you file.
- Other emirates: media guides point to ICP smart services.
In both cases you apply from outside the UAE. u.ae is clear on that.
Documents checklist
Official pages we read do not publish a full list. Have these ready:
- Passport copy, with the old UAE residence page
- Emirates ID or file number
- Proof of the reason you stayed away: hospital reports, a university letter, an employer letter, or similar
- For employees: the employer's agreement, because the company is your sponsor
The reason is the heart of the file. u.ae says you must give a valid one.
Steps
- Count your days outside.
- Check the exempt list above. If you are on it, you do not need this permit.
- Gather proof of your reason.
- Ask your sponsor to file, or file yourself if you are self-sponsored.
- Pay the fine and the fee the system shows.
- Book your flight to land within 30 days of approval.
Processing time
No official processing time is published on the pages we could read. Do not book a flight before the approval arrives, and keep the 30-day entry window in mind when you do.
Why requests are refused
- No real reason. A holiday that ran long is weak. A hospital stay with reports is strong.
- The residence expired while you were away. There is nothing left to bring back, and a new visa is needed.
- Applied from inside the UAE. The rule is to apply from abroad.
- Entered after the 30 days. The approval had lapsed.
- No support from the sponsor. An employer that has moved on will not agree.
If the permit is refused, your sponsor can still apply for a new residence from scratch. For self-sponsored visas that means meeting the conditions again. See UAE residence visa.
How it works with us
Message us on WhatsApp or use the form with your passport copy, your old visa page and a short note on why you were away. A visa adviser checks the emirate, whether you are exempt, and whether your residence is still inside its validity. You get one total price before you pay. The team prepares the request with your proof, files it with GDRFA or ICP and sends you the approval when it comes. DubaiVisaDesk.com is a private visa service. GDRFA or ICP decides whether you can return on the same residence.
If the request is refused, the government side is not refunded. Before you pay, your adviser tells you in writing what part of our total, if any, would come back.
Tips
- If you know you will be away close to 180 days, fly back for a short visit before the count runs out.
- Renew before you leave if the visa ends during your trip. See visa renewal in Dubai.
- Track the approval on the visa status check.
