Finns do not need a visa for the UAE. The UAE ministry of foreign affairs lists Finland as visa free, with a free multiple entry visit visa on arrival, valid six months, up to 90 days in total. The Finnish foreign ministry adds warnings that matter more than the visa: an emergency passport will not get you back in, there is a ban on sharing attack images, and drug rules are strict.
What the Finnish foreign ministry says
The travel advice for the UAE on um.fi was dated when we read it. The security level is to exercise special caution. The ministry says the Gulf situation has improved since the military action of spring, that regional tension means it can still change fast, and that changes can affect commercial flights. Follow local authority notices and avoid military sites. It also recommends a travel notification at matkustusilmoitus.fi.
It says plainly that it is not responsible for other states' entry rules, such as passport validity or visa duty, and points to the UAE government portal, GDRFA in Dubai and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security in Abu Dhabi. Staying illegally carries a fine.
The emergency passport catch
If you live in the UAE, leave for another country intending to return, and lose your passport, an emergency passport from Finland is no use for coming back. The ministry says UAE border authorities do not accept it for re-entry, and that it is issued only for travel to Finland. The warning covers residents and holidaymakers. Get the replacement while you are still inside the UAE, or plan to return through Finland.
Rules a Finn should know
- Drugs: zero tolerance. The ministry says the minimum sentence is four years, including for traces of drugs used before arrival and for transit passengers.
- Photography: military sites, airports, ports and government buildings must not be photographed, and that includes drones.
- Social media: posts that insult people, religion, authorities or the leadership are punishable, as are rumours. Sharing information or images about attacks on the UAE is banned, even in private groups, with penalties up to arrest.
- Medicine: prescription drugs brought in are restricted. Check with the ministry of health first.
Entry and stay
The permit is issued at the border at no charge. It is valid for six months, allows multiple entries and counts up to 90 days of stay in total. Both the UAE ministry of foreign affairs and Emirates airline publish this. Checked .
When 90 days is not enough
ICP charges AED 100 to apply and AED 500 for the extension. GDRFA in Dubai lists AED 600 plus 5% VAT. A tourist stay stops at 120 days in total, and every extra day is AED 50. The Finnish embassy in Abu Dhabi
The Embassy of Finland in Abu Dhabi, in Etihad Towers, offers Finnish passport and ID card services by appointment only, consular assistance and notarial services. Visa and residence permit queries go to VFS Global, which runs the centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The embassy says passports can also be applied for in Finland, which can be quicker if you are visiting home anyway.
Relatives with other passports
You may live in the UAE with a spouse or in-laws who need a visa. A resident can sponsor a visit visa, and ICP lists AED 100 for the application plus AED 100 a month for a single entry. Processing is 2 days. We prepare the file. Our Dubai visa requirements page has the sponsor documents.
