Visa-free 90 days; we extend and file for family

Last updated

Montenegrins do not need a visa for the UAE. The UAE ministry of foreign affairs lists Montenegro as visa free, with a free multiple entry visit visa on arrival, valid six months, up to 90 days of stay in total. That settles the airport. The questions that remain are how to stay longer, who to call in the UAE, and how a partner or relative with another passport gets in.

The entry rule

The permit is stamped at the border and costs nothing. It stays valid for six months, allows many entries and counts up to 90 days in total. The UAE ministry of foreign affairs publishes the exemption and Emirates airline repeats the terms. Checked .

It is a visit permit only. Work needs a residence visa filed by the employer, and a visit permit does not convert itself into one. The steps are on Dubai visa requirements.

The reverse rule: Montenegro for UAE residents

Many people searching for Montenegro and Dubai together want the other direction. On the Montenegrin government page for the UAE, nationals of the United Arab Emirates may enter and stay in Montenegro up to 90 days without a visa. Other nationalities who live in the UAE have a different position, and a UAE residence permit is not on Montenegro's list of qualifying documents. Our page Montenegro visa for UAE residents covers it, including Indian passports.

Montenegro's embassy in Abu Dhabi

Montenegro has an embassy in Abu Dhabi. The government page lists an emergency line for Montenegrin citizens and says nothing about passport or ID services, so ask the embassy before you plan a renewal around a visit. The same page says people who need a Montenegrin visa can apply at the embassy or at VFS Global centres in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

There is no Montenegrin consulate listed for Dubai on that page.

How many Montenegrins are here

In a statement carried by the Serbian outlet Novosti on , Montenegro's foreign ministry said the Abu Dhabi embassy knew of about 160 citizens living in the UAE with regulated residence status. The same statement said registering with a mission is voluntary and that the ministry holds no full count of citizens living or working in the region. If you live here, consider telling the embassy. The ministry's own words are that records exist only for those who get in touch.

Relations between the two countries

The UAE ministry of foreign affairs says the two countries set up diplomatic relations on and the UAE opened its embassy in Podgorica in , the first in the Western Balkans. Agreements cover air services, double taxation, investment protection and visa exemption for diplomatic passports. The diplomatic exemption does not apply to an ordinary passport, which is covered by the 90-day rule above.

Staying past 90 days

The free permit ends at 90 days. After that you either leave, extend, or change to a residence visa. Extending through ICP costs AED 100 to apply plus AED 500 for the extension, and ICP caps a tourist stay at 120 days in total. In Dubai, GDRFA lists AED 600 plus 5% VAT. Any day beyond your permit is AED 50.

Those amounts come from the ICP visit visa extension page and the GDRFA service page, checked . Do not wait for the last day. Our Dubai visa extension page has the steps, and the overstay fine page shows how fast a late exit adds up.

Regional security advice

The UK Foreign Office page for the UAE, updated , says that since 8 July there have been strikes and retaliatory attacks by Iran in several places across the region. It warns of possible flight cancellations and airspace closures. We could not open Montenegro's own advice for the UAE, and search results only suggest that the ministry asked citizens to avoid several Middle East countries in June. Read the ministry's live notice and check your airline before you book.

Partners and relatives with other passports

Your Montenegrin passport covers only you. A partner or parent with an Indian, Filipino or Nigerian passport needs their own route, and the rules differ by passport. If you hold UAE residence, you can sponsor their visit through ICP at AED 100 for the application plus AED 100 a month for a single entry, and ICP lists 2 days to process. If you are only visiting, a licensed Dubai company can file a tourist visa for them instead. See Dubai visa price for the GDRFA amounts.

We read their passport first, then pick the route and prepare the file.
