The family visa processing time in Dubai is about 48 hours for each GDRFA step: first the entry permit, then the residence, once the medical and insurance are done. ICP lists 2 days per step in the other emirates. Parents, stepchildren and sons over 25 are humanitarian cases, which GDRFA lists at 14 days. The longest wait is often attesting certificates abroad, which no official page puts a time on.

A spouse visa from start to finish

Here is the order for a wife or husband who lives outside the UAE, with the official time where one exists.

  1. Attest the marriage certificate. It needs the chain in the country where it was issued, then MOFA in the UAE. No UAE page gives a time for the foreign part. See marriage certificate attestation.
  2. Apply for the entry permit. 48 hours at GDRFA.
  3. Your spouse travels and enters. From the entry date, 60 days to finish the residence.
  4. Medical test. 24 hours standard, faster if you pay more.
  5. Health insurance. ICP lists valid insurance for issuance.
  6. Residence permit and Emirates ID. 48 hours at GDRFA for the residence.

If the paperwork is ready before you start, the government part can finish within days. The spouse visa page has the full fee list.

Children and newborns

Children under 18 skip the medical, which removes a step. Sons under 25 and unmarried daughters follow the same 48-hour steps as a spouse. A baby born in the UAE has no entry permit at all, but the parents must have the birth certificate, passport, Emirates ID and residence within 120 days of birth. The newborn visa page explains that countdown.

Parents and other humanitarian cases

Parents, parents-in-law, stepchildren, sons 25 and over and wards go to a GDRFA committee. Each request is reviewed case by case, and the page lists 14 days. Expect questions on salary (GDRFA lists AED 10,000 a month for parents), housing and bank statements. After approval, a financial guarantee of AED 5,000 per request is required. The parents visa page goes through the file.

Deadlines that run while you wait

  • 60 days from entry. The family member must finish the residence within 60 days of entering on the entry permit, or overstay fines apply.
  • 30 days for missing documents. GDRFA cancels a request if the missing papers are not added within 30 days.
  • 120 days for a newborn. From the date of birth.
  • Your own expiry date. A dependant's residence cannot outlast the sponsor's, so a sponsor visa near expiry can hold up the family file.

What makes a family visa slower

  • Certificates attested in the wrong order, or not attested at all.
  • Salary below the rule. u.ae sets AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation, for a spouse and children.
  • Tenancy contract or utility bill missing.
  • Medical result not ready for an adult dependant.
  • Insurance not yet bought for the dependant.
  • Names spelled differently across passports and certificates.
  • Visiting first, then switching. A status change inside the UAE is quicker than leaving, but it needs the old visa cancelled and a new entry permit.

Documents to have ready on day one

  • Passport of each family member, valid at least 6 months, and a photo on a white background.
  • Attested marriage certificate and attested birth certificates.
  • Your passport, residence, employment contract or salary certificate.
  • Tenancy contract and a water or electricity bill.
  • Health insurance for each dependant.
  • Father's no objection letter if the mother sponsors the children.

Questions people ask

How long does a spouse visa take in the UAE?

The official steps are short: GDRFA lists 48 hours for the entry permit and 48 hours for the residence, and ICP lists 2 days for each. The medical result adds 24 hours at the standard rate. Attesting a marriage certificate from abroad is what usually takes longest.

How long does the family entry permit take in Dubai?

GDRFA lists 48 hours for the family entry permit once the application is complete. Once your spouse or child enters on it, you have 60 days to finish the residence.

How long does a parents visa take in Dubai?

Longer than a spouse or child visa. Parents are a humanitarian case at GDRFA, reviewed by a committee, and the page lists 14 days. A financial guarantee is also asked for after approval.

Why is my family visa application taking so long?

Check first for a missing or unclear document, such as an unattested certificate or a salary certificate below the limit. GDRFA gives 30 days to add missing documents before the request is cancelled, so check the application status often.

Can I pay extra to get the medical result faster?

Yes. In Dubai the standard medical costs AED 270 with a 24-hour result. A 6-hour result or the 30-minute Smart Salem service costs AED 700, and the 2-hour service costs AED 1,020.

Is it faster to change status inside the UAE?

It saves the trip out and back. GDRFA lists 48 hours for a status change, at AED 500 plus AED 10 and AED 10. Your family member can stay in the country while the new visa is issued.
