Marriage certificate attestation

A marriage or birth certificate issued abroad must be attested by the UAE embassy in that country and then by MOFA in the UAE. MOFA charges AED 150 per personal document.

A marriage certificate from outside the UAE is accepted for a family visa only after attestation. It goes through the issuing country's own steps, then the UAE embassy in that country, then the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). MOFA charges AED 150 per personal document. Dubai firms publish about AED 500 to AED 2,000 for the full chain. Children's birth certificates follow the same path.

Why the visa file needs it

GDRFA and ICP do not take a foreign certificate at face value. The attestation stamps tell them the paper is genuine and that the issuing authority is real. You see the requirement in four places:

  • GDRFA family entry permit: a "certified marriage contract" and an "attested birth certificate" for each child.
  • ICP issuing residency: proof of kinship, meaning an attested marriage contract and the children's birth certificates.
  • GDRFA humanitarian cases: "all international documents" must be attested by the UAE embassy and MOFA. This covers parents, stepchildren, wards and adopted children.
  • u.ae, having a baby: to register a baby born in the UAE you need your attested marriage certificate, translated into Arabic if it is not in Arabic.

The spouse visa in Dubai and children visa in Dubai pages show where each certificate fits in the file.

The attestation chain, step by step

  1. Home country steps. The issuing country certifies its own document first. Which offices are involved depends on that country, and the UAE pages we read do not list them. Check with the authority that issued the certificate.
  2. UAE embassy or consulate in the issuing country. It stamps the certificate as legalised for use in the UAE. GDRFA's humanitarian page names this step for documents from abroad.
  3. MOFA in the UAE. The final stamp, AED 150 per personal document.
  4. Arabic translation, where asked. u.ae asks for an Arabic translation of a non-Arabic marriage certificate when registering a newborn. Other services may ask too.

Steps 1 and 2 happen abroad. Only step 3 can be done once you are in the UAE.

Fees for the UAE part

Personal document (marriage or birth certificate) AED 150 per document
Commercial document AED 2,000 per document
Courier, normal AED 40
Courier, express AED 150

Source: MOFA FAQs, checked . Fees in the issuing country and at the UAE embassy are set there and are not on MOFA's page.

A family of four with one marriage certificate and two birth certificates pays MOFA AED 150 three times, before any home country or embassy charges.

What Dubai firms charge for the full chain

Two Dubai firms publish about AED 500 to AED 2,000 to attest a marriage certificate issued abroad (cost guides of 2 Dubai firms, checked ). The spread is wide because the home country part differs so much. Ask whether courier, translation and the UAE embassy fee are inside the quote.

Documents that usually need attesting for a family visa

  • Marriage certificate, for a wife or husband.
  • Birth certificate of each child.
  • Father's no objection letter, if the wife sponsors the children and the letter was issued abroad.
  • University graduation certificate, for sons 25 and over on the humanitarian route (GDRFA says attested by the UAE embassy and MOFA if issued abroad).
  • Court guardianship certificate, for a ward.
  • Court adoption certificate, with the orphanage details and the country's no objection for travel.
  • Guardianship document, where a stepchild's father has died.

Before you send the certificate

  • Check that names match the passports letter for letter. A spelling gap between the certificate and the passport can get a file sent back.
  • Ask the issuing office which version it certifies, the original or its own certified copy, before you start.
  • Keep clear scans of every stamp, front and back. You will need them for the GDRFA or ICP application.
  • Do every certificate in one round. Sending the marriage certificate now and the birth certificates later doubles the courier and the waiting.

Processing time

MOFA's FAQ, as we read it, does not give a processing time for personal documents. Home country and embassy times vary by country. Once the certificates are ready, GDRFA states 48 hours for the family entry permit. The family visa processing time page covers the rest.

Why attested papers still get rejected

  • A missing stamp in the chain, most often the UAE embassy step.
  • Names or dates that do not match the passports.
  • No Arabic translation where the service asks for one.
  • A scan that is cut off or too dark to read the stamps.

Born in the UAE

For a baby born in Dubai, the UAE birth certificate is attested by the Ministry of Health and Prevention and MOFA, not by an embassy abroad. You have 120 days from birth to arrange the birth certificate, passport, Emirates ID and visa. The newborn visa in Dubai guide covers the order of steps. The full budget for a family file is on the family visa cost page.

Questions people ask

Do I need to attest my marriage certificate for a spouse visa in Dubai?

Yes, if it was issued outside the UAE. GDRFA asks for a certified marriage contract for the family entry permit, ICP asks for an attested marriage contract as proof of kinship, and GDRFA's humanitarian page says all international documents must be attested by the UAE embassy and MOFA.

How much does MOFA charge to attest a marriage certificate?

MOFA's FAQ lists AED 150 per personal document, which covers marriage and birth certificates. Commercial documents cost far more. If you use MOFA's courier, normal delivery is AED 40 and express is AED 150.

What do agencies in Dubai charge for full marriage certificate attestation?

Two Dubai firms publish about AED 500 to AED 2,000 for a marriage certificate from abroad, covering the whole chain. Their pages are cost guides, so ask what is included: home country steps, the UAE embassy, MOFA and courier.

Do my children's birth certificates also need attestation?

Yes. GDRFA lists an attested birth certificate for each child on the family entry permit, and ICP lists children's birth certificates as proof of kinship. Each certificate is a separate document with its own MOFA fee.

My baby was born in Dubai. Does the birth certificate need attestation?

u.ae says a UAE birth certificate is attested by the Ministry of Health and Prevention and MOFA. It also asks for your attested marriage certificate, translated into Arabic if it is not already in Arabic.

Can I attest the certificate after I arrive in the UAE?

Only the last step happens in the UAE. The home country steps and the UAE embassy stamp must be done in the country that issued the certificate, so start before you move or ask someone there to handle it.
