To sponsor a spouse and children on a UAE residence visa, you need a monthly salary of AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 if your employer gives you accommodation. Your job title does not matter. Parents and parents-in-law sit on a separate GDRFA route that asks for AED 10,000 a month. GDRFA states 48 hours for a standard family file and 14 days for parents.
The salary figure for each family member
Different family members fall under different rules. The spouse and children use the standard family residence. Parents and some other relatives go through GDRFA's humanitarian cases service, which sets its own conditions.
| Who you sponsor | Salary or income rule | Route in Dubai |
|---|---|---|
| Wife or husband | AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation | Family residence |
| Sons under 25, unmarried daughters | Same as spouse | Family residence |
| Children with special needs, any age | Same as spouse | Family residence |
| Father, mother, parents-in-law | AED 10,000 a month | Humanitarian cases |
| Sons 25 and over | Salary proof plus certified proof of study or graduation | Humanitarian cases |
| Stepchildren | Salary certificate or contract, no figure stated | Humanitarian cases |
| Business partner sponsoring family | Partner's share at least AED 48,000 | Family residence |

For the step by step on the standard route, read the spouse visa in Dubai guide. For mothers and fathers, the parents visa in Dubai page covers the humanitarian file in full.
How the three official pages word the rule
The figure is the same, but the wording is not, and people quote all three.
- u.ae: employees "can sponsor their families regardless of their job titles if they earn a minimum salary of AED 4,000 or AED 3,000 plus accommodation".
- ICP: a "minimum monthly income of AED 3,000 plus employer-provided housing, or AED 4,000 if housing is not provided".
- GDRFA entry permit page: one short line that puts housing first and then gives AED 4,000 or AED 3,000, without saying which figure goes with which case.
Read together, the ICP sentence is the clearest. AED 3,000 works only when the employer provides the housing. If you rent your own flat, plan on AED 4,000.
What the official pages count as proof of salary
None of the pages define salary in detail. They do not say whether transport or other allowances count. What they do list is the paper that proves it:
- An employment contract.
- A salary certificate. GDRFA names this for government, semi-government and free zone employees.
- A partnership contract, if you are a partner or investor rather than an employee.
- An employment certificate showing family income and housing, on ICP's list.
- 3 months of bank statements, on the humanitarian route for parents and other relatives.
So the safe approach is simple. Your contract and salary certificate should both show a figure at or above the limit, and the bank statements should match what the certificate says.
Housing proof
Salary is half of the test. The other half is a home that fits the family.
ICP asks for "adequate housing" for family members, "in proportion to the property's capacity", owned or rented. GDRFA's family residence page asks for "suitable housing for family members" and adds that the family lives where the sponsor lives. In practice that means:
- A lease agreement in your name. ICP's renewal list names the lease agreement and a water or electricity bill.
- An attested tenancy contract on the GDRFA humanitarian route, sized for the family. A studio for two parents and two children is hard to defend.
- A letter from your employer if the company provides your housing. This is what lets you use the AED 3,000 figure.
Fees once you meet the salary rule
| GDRFA fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Family entry permit | AED 200 plus 5% VAT |
| Residence permit issuance | AED 200 |
| Knowledge Dirham and Innovation Dirham | AED 10 each |
| Delivery | AED 20 |
| Inside the country fee (if the relative is already in the UAE) | AED 500 |
| Guarantee for parents (humanitarian) | AED 5,000 per request, total capped at AED 15,000 |

When the agency figures differ
You will find higher numbers online. They do not match the official pages we read.
- Women sponsors. Two agency pages say a woman needs a higher salary to sponsor her husband, decided case by case. GDRFA states that both male and female residents can sponsor family, including a husband, and lists no extra salary. The husband visa in Dubai page covers the papers.
- Parents. Several agency blogs quote a parent salary well above AED 10,000, sometimes linked to a two-bedroom flat. GDRFA's humanitarian page says AED 10,000.
- Sons. One agency says sons can be sponsored to 18 only. GDRFA's entry permit page says up to 25.
If you are close to a limit, go by the GDRFA or ICP page for your emirate and keep a printout of it with your file.
If your salary is under AED 4,000
GDRFA's humanitarian page covers wife and children for residents with expired or cancelled residence inside the UAE. It asks for attested marriage and birth certificates, 3 months of bank statements and an attested tenancy. Every humanitarian file is reviewed by a committee case by case, so this is not a shortcut.
Short visits are another option. A family visit visa has its own salary tiers: see the family visit visa page.
Steps to check you qualify
- Pick the route: standard family residence, or humanitarian cases for parents and other relatives.
- Compare your salary certificate with the figure in the table above.
- Confirm whether your employer provides housing, and get that in writing.
- Gather the lease, a utility bill and 3 months of bank statements.
- Attest marriage and birth certificates issued abroad before you apply.
Processing time
GDRFA states 48 hours for the family entry permit and 48 hours for residence issuance. Humanitarian cases take 14 days. ICP states 2 days.
Common refusal reasons
- Salary on the certificate below the limit, even by a small amount.
- Using the AED 3,000 figure while renting your own flat.
- A tenancy too small for the number of people.
- Bank statements that show a different salary from the certificate.
- Sons over 25 filed on the standard route instead of the humanitarian one.
Official sources
- u.ae residence visa for family members: salary wording, job title rule, who can be sponsored.
- ICP issuing residency: income and housing rule, documents.
- GDRFA family entry permit: salary line, partner share, fees.
- GDRFA family residence: housing, male and female sponsors.
- GDRFA humanitarian cases: parents salary, guarantee, stepchildren, sons over 25.
