Myanmar needs a visa before you fly. The UK foreign office says you cannot get one on arrival, and tourists use the official e-visa portal. The bigger question for UAE residents is safety. Canada's advisory says avoid all travel, and the UK advises against all or all but essential travel to many areas.
What governments say about travel
- Canada: "Avoid all travel", updated , citing politically motivated violence, terrorist attacks, kidnapping and arbitrary detention, and armed conflict. Canada says its help is extremely limited, and its embassy in Yangon needs government permission to travel outside the capital.
- UK foreign office: advises against all travel to Chin State, Kachin State, Rakhine State and other areas, and against all but essential travel to areas including Shan State South and East and Mandalay Region. It calls the conflict increasingly volatile. New guidance on mobile device registration and drones was added on .
We do not promise a visa for travel the authorities discourage, and we will not push you to go.
Visa route
Tourists apply on the Myanmar e-visa portal. Business visas need a sponsor from a registered Myanmar company or chamber of commerce and an invitation letter. The e-visa site itself loads its text by script, so we could not read its fee, validity or processing time. An adviser quotes them in writing before you pay.
Papers
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after arrival. Expect to supply a passport photo, a flight plan and a place to stay. Overstaying means a fine and possible detention.
Dual nationals
Myanmar does not recognise dual citizenship, and the UK says dual nationals may be treated as Myanmar citizens, which limits consular help.
How it works with us
