Qatar residents with a non-GCC passport apply for a UAE entry visa before they travel, and Qatari citizens do not. There is no road between Qatar and the UAE, so most people fly from Doha. GDRFA Dubai lists AED 52.5, AED 100 and AED 100 and says 48 hours. We check the profession on your permit and file for the whole family.
Citizens and residents are treated differently
u.ae says GCC citizens need no visa, so a Qatari walks in. A Nepali site engineer in Doha, an Egyptian teacher in Al Wakrah or a British banker on the Pearl is a resident, not a citizen, and falls under the GCC resident visa.
British and several other passports get a UAE visa on arrival, which makes this application unnecessary. Check the UAE visa on arrival list against your own passport first.
Flying versus driving
A drive from Qatar goes through Saudi Arabia: Abu Samra out of Qatar, then Al Batha and Al Ghuwaifat into the UAE. One insurance blog, dated , gives about 720 km and 7 to 9 hours. The catch is not the distance. Your passport may need its own permission to cross Saudi Arabia, and we have not confirmed that rule on an official page. Ask us before you plan the road.
The UAE visa is the same either way. Only the border changes.
What GDRFA reads on your file
Service fee, application fee and issuance fee aside, the file is judged on the residence permit. GDRFA wants a copy or an electronic extract that shows both your profession and the validity. It also takes a passport copy with the cover page valid at least 6 months and a recent photo on a white background. The visa covers foreigners living in a GCC state, their family members and the domestic workers living with them. You apply all day at smart.gdrfad.gov.ae.

Typical reasons for refusal
- The profession is not accepted for this visa.
- The extract leaves out the job title.
- Passport validity under 6 months.

- A previous entry ban.
