Dubai work visa processing time, once papers are in order, is short at each official step: MOHRE lists 2 working days for the work permit, GDRFA 48 hours for the employment entry permit and 48 hours for the residence, the standard medical gives a result in 24 hours, and ICP lists 5 days for a new Emirates ID. What really sets the pace is degree attestation, quota and your home country's exit rules.

Official time for each stage

Work permit, new hire from abroad MOHRE 2 working days
Work permit transfer MOHRE 2 working days

Medical fitness, VIP Dubai Health Authority 6 hours or 2 hours
Medical fitness, Smart Salem Dubai Health Authority 30 minutes

These times are short on paper. Each clock only starts when that stage has everything it needs, so one missing paper holds the stages after it.

Deadlines that run alongside

The process also has fixed windows. Miss one and you pay fines or start over.

  • 60 days from entry: the employment entry permit lets you stay 60 days to finish the medical, Emirates ID and residence.
  • 60 days for the contract: MOHRE wants the employment contract filed within 60 days of entry or status change.
  • 60 days before expiry: the earliest point MOHRE lets an employer renew the permit.
  • 90 days after cancellation: the window for a new employer to file a transfer permit.
  • Two years: the life of the residence and of the standard work permit.

Overstaying after the entry permit window costs AED 50 a day. Details on the UAE overstay fine page.

Where the time really goes

Before MOHRE

  • Degree attestation abroad. For skill levels 1 to 5, MOHRE wants an attested certificate. The foreign part of that chain has no UAE timeline, and it is often the slowest item in the file.
  • Quota. The company needs a free electronic quota. MOHRE does not publish how long a quota request takes.
  • The job offer. Both sides sign the MOHRE offer before the permit request. A wrong title means a new offer.

Leaving your home country

Some countries add their own step before a worker can fly out:

  • India: emigration clearance for ECR passport holders going to work. See Dubai work visa for Indians.
  • Philippines: an OEC from the Department of Migrant Workers, valid 60 days and single use.
  • Bangladesh: BMET emigration clearance.
  • Sri Lanka: registration with the SLBFE.
  • Kenya: use a recruitment agency registered with the National Employment Authority.

None of these have a UAE processing time. Plan them alongside the permit, not after it.

Inside the UAE

  • The entry permit waits until MOHRE endorses the permit.
  • A status change inside the country is filed with the entry permit, which saves a flight but not time at GDRFA.
  • A failed or repeated medical holds the residence.

Processing time to cancel or change jobs

Cancelling an employment visa runs in reverse: MOHRE cancels the permit (2 working days), then GDRFA cancels the residence (48 hours). The grace period then starts. GDRFA's private sector page gives 60 days; the ICP list gives 90 days to skilled levels 1 to 3 and 30 days to most others. See grace period after visa cancellation and employment visa cancellation.

A job change through a MOHRE transfer avoids leaving the country. The steps are on change job in the UAE.

How to track a file

  1. Ask the employer for the MOHRE transaction or permit number.
  2. Check MOHRE's inquiry site, under Application Status or Electronic Work Permit Information.
  3. For the entry permit and residence, use the GDRFA status inquiry with the file number.

Our work permit status check page walks through both.

Common reasons for a slow file

  • A degree that is attested in the home country but not yet at MOFA in the UAE.
  • A skill level on the offer that does not match the certificate.
  • A photo rejected for its background.
  • An old work permit still active on the worker's record.
  • A company licence that is up for renewal.

Tips to keep it moving

  • Start attestation the day the offer arrives.
  • Renew a passport with under six months left before the permit is filed.
  • Book the medical as soon as you land, not near day 60.
  • Keep a copy of every receipt and the entry permit, in case a step is queried.

The fee for each stage is on employment visa cost, and the full order of steps is on the UAE work visa process.

Questions people ask

How long does a Dubai work permit take?

MOHRE lists 2 working days for a new permit for a worker from abroad, once the file is complete and the company has quota. Transfers and cancellations also show 2 working days.

What is the Dubai employment visa duration?

The standard employment residence is valid for two years and can be renewed. The entry permit that comes before it lets you stay 60 days from entry while the residence is finished.

How long does a Dubai work visa take for Indians?

The UAE steps take the same time for every nationality. What adds time for some Indian workers is emigration clearance, which applies only to ECR passport holders going abroad to work. Degree attestation in India can also take a while.

Does cancelling a work visa in Dubai take long?

The work permit is cancelled at MOHRE first, listed at 2 working days. GDRFA then cancels the residence, with 48 hours listed for the service. After that the grace period starts.

Why is my work visa taking longer than 48 hours?

The 48 hours only run once GDRFA has a complete file. Common holds are a work permit MOHRE has not yet endorsed, a passport with under six months, an unclear photo or a medical result that is not yet uploaded.

Can the work visa be done faster?

Only the medical has paid speed options. In Dubai the 6-hour VIP or Smart Salem 30-minute result costs AED 700 and the 2-hour VIP service AED 1,020. The MOHRE and GDRFA times are fixed.
