Golden visa for engineers

No golden visa category is written for engineers. Most qualify through the skilled professional route: a UAE job at MOHRE level 1 or 2, a degree and AED 30,000 a month.

The UAE has no golden visa category just for engineers. An engineer qualifies like any skilled professional: a valid UAE work permit at MOHRE occupational level 1 or 2, at least a bachelor's degree, and a monthly salary of at least AED 30,000. In Dubai, GDRFA states 48 hours once the file is complete. Research, patents or industry experience open other routes.

So the real question for an engineer is which route fits your profile. Here they are.

Four routes an engineer can use

Route Who it suits Who decides first
Skilled professional (salary) Engineers employed in the UAE on AED 30,000 a month or more No nomination; GDRFA or ICP checks the file
Scientist or researcher Engineers with a strong research record and a master's or PhD Emirates Scientists Council
Industry and 4IR specialist Manufacturing and industrial engineers Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology
Inventor Engineers holding a patent Ministry of Economy or the local authority

Software and computer engineers have a fifth option on paper: the digital technology talent nomination from the Emirates Council for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transactions. The official pages name the nominating body but publish no scoring rules for it, so most software engineers use the salary route.

The salary route in detail

This is the route most engineers in Dubai and Abu Dhabi take. ICP calls it skilled professionals at senior occupational levels under the MOHRE classification.

Occupation level

Level 1 covers chairpersons and chief executives. Level 2 covers specialists. Your level comes from the job title on your work permit, not from your CV. Abu Dhabi's ADRO page lists engineering among the level 2 professions, alongside sciences, health, education, IT and law. If your permit shows a technician or supervisor title, the file will not pass on salary alone, whatever you earn.

Salary

ICP says at least AED 30,000 a month. GDRFA's terms say approximately AED 30,000, and its document list says no less than AED 30,000. None of them defines basic or total pay. Some Dubai service centres read it as basic salary. If your basic is below the line and allowances take you over it, ask GDRFA before you file.

What GDRFA asks for

  • Passport copy
  • Valid UAE employment contract or salary certificate (government, semi-government or free zone employers are all accepted)
  • Bank statement showing salary transfers for the last 6 months
  • Bachelor's degree or higher, with a Ministry of Education equivalency report for a foreign degree, or attestation for a UAE one
  • Licence to practise where your profession needs one
  • Health insurance for you and your family, valid for the whole permit

GDRFA's licence examples are physicians, pharmacists and teachers. Engineering is not named, so most engineers file without one.

The specialist routes

Engineers with a research record

An engineer with a master's from a top 250 university or a PhD from a top 500 university, in engineering or technology, can be recommended by the Emirates Scientists Council. The bar is an FWCI of 1.0 or more and an h-index of 10 or more. A Scopus h-index of 20 or real R&D achievements can replace those figures. Our scientists and researchers golden visa page walks through it.

Industrial and manufacturing engineers

ICP takes recommendations from the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology for industry and Fourth Industrial Revolution specialists. ADRO in Abu Dhabi spells out its version: a bachelor's in manufacturing or industrial engineering, a role at ISCO level 1 or 2, and at least 7 years of technical experience.

Engineers with a patent

The Ministry of Economy or the local authority nominates inventors. GDRFA's talent renewal page adds that the patent should add value to the national economy.

Fees for the salary route in Dubai

GDRFA fee line Amount
Residence permit AED 1,100
Knowledge Dirham AED 10
Innovation Dirham AED 10
Applying from inside the UAE AED 500
Delivery AED 20

Source: GDRFA specialised scientists and skilled professionals page, checked . GDRFA adds that the issuance fee rises by AED 100 a year whenever the residency runs over two years. It does not print a 10-year total. Outside Dubai, ICP lists AED 100 for the application, AED 100 per year of residence and AED 100 for smart services. The medical test and Emirates ID come on top: see the golden visa cost breakdown.

What Dubai agencies charge

Two Dubai Amer centres publish all-in prices of AED 2,711.75 to AED 2,992.90 for the residence permit stage of the GDRFA golden routes, engineers included on one of the lists (published prices of 2 centres, checked ). Medical and Emirates ID are extra on both.

Processing time

GDRFA gives 48 hours for skilled professionals once the file is complete. ICP gives 2 days. The specialist routes take longer, because the nomination comes first and no official page gives a time for it.

Why engineering files get refused

  • Job title at the wrong level. A site engineer title on the permit may not map to level 2. Check before you pay anything.
  • Salary under the line on paper. A contract showing a lower basic with allowances on top invites questions.
  • Fewer than 6 months of transfers. New joiners often have to wait.
  • No degree equivalency. A foreign engineering degree without the Ministry of Education report stops the file.
  • Diploma, not degree. A technical diploma does not meet the bachelor's rule.

Remember the cancellation rule too. GDRFA says the permit is cancelled if the salary falls below AED 30,000 or the contract ends. Engineers on project contracts should keep that in mind.

How it works with us for an engineer's file

Send your passport, work permit, contract and last salary certificate on WhatsApp or through the form here. A visa adviser reads the job title against the level rule, checks the salary and the 6 months of transfers, and tells you plainly if a specialist route would suit you better. You get one total price, confirmed before you pay. The team then files the application, books the medical and Emirates ID, and follows up until the permit is issued. DubaiVisaDesk.com is a private visa service. GDRFA or ICP makes the decision.

If the permit is refused, the government fees stay with the authorities. Before you pay, the adviser tells you in writing which part of our total, if any, you get back.

Family members can go in the same request. See the golden visa for family page.

How an engineer applies for the UAE golden visa on salary

  1. Check the occupation level

Look at the job title on your MOHRE work permit. The route needs occupational level 1 or level 2.

  2. Confirm the salary

Get a salary certificate showing at least AED 30,000 a month and a 6-month bank statement with the salary transfers.

  3. Prepare the degree

Foreign engineering degrees need a Ministry of Education equivalency report. UAE degrees need attestation.

  4. Buy health insurance

Cover for yourself and any family you add, valid for the life of the permit.

  5. File with GDRFA or ICP

Apply through the GDRFA site or app with UAE Pass, an Amer centre, or ICP smart services outside Dubai.

Questions people ask

Is there a golden visa category for engineers in the UAE?

No. ICP and GDRFA do not list engineers as a category of their own. Engineers apply as skilled professionals on salary, or, with research, a patent or industry experience, through a nomination as a scientist, inventor or industry specialist.

What salary does an engineer need for the golden visa?

The skilled professional route asks for a monthly salary of at least AED 30,000, or the same in foreign currency, under a valid UAE work contract. Official pages do not say whether this means basic or total salary, so ask before you file.

Can a software engineer get the UAE golden visa?

Yes, on the same salary route as any engineer, if the job sits at MOHRE level 1 or 2 and pays AED 30,000 a month. A digital talent nomination from the Emirates Council for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transactions is a second route for standout tech profiles.

Does a civil or mechanical engineer need a special licence for the golden visa?

GDRFA asks for a licence to practise only where the profession needs one, and gives physicians, pharmacists and teachers as examples. It does not name engineering. If your employer holds a licence for your role in your emirate, include it.

What happens to my golden visa if I change engineering jobs?

GDRFA says the permit is cancelled if the salary falls below AED 30,000 or the contract is cancelled. Plan a move so the new contract and salary are in place, and ask GDRFA how the change is recorded on your file.

Can an engineer with a PhD apply as a scientist instead?

Yes, if the profile meets the Emirates Scientists Council rules: a PhD in engineering or technology from a top 500 university, or a master's from a top 250 one, plus an FWCI of 1.0 and an h-index of 10.
