A UAE resident needs a South Africa visa only if their passport is not on South Africa's exemption list. UK, US and UAE ordinary passports get 90 days visa-free. Indian, Nigerian and Egyptian ordinary passports do not. When a visa is needed, the file is submitted in person, with biometrics, at a VFS centre or a South African mission.
The rule depends on the passport
South Africa's Department of Home Affairs publishes an exemption list. The edition we read was issued on and says it can change without notice. Here is how some common UAE passports sit on it:
| Passport | On the list |
|---|---|
| United Arab Emirates | 90 days visa-free |
| United Kingdom | 90 days visa-free |
| United States | 90 days visa-free |
| Kenya | Exempt, with per annum limits |
| India | Visa needed (exempt only for diplomatic, official and service passports) |
| Nigeria | Visa needed (same note) |
| Egypt | Visa needed (same note) |
| Bangladesh, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka | Not on the list |
Source: Department of Home Affairs, exempt countries document, checked . Being on the "not listed" side means you should assume a visa is needed. We could not find at least two Dubai agencies with a clear published price, so there is no market range here.
Your UAE residence does not change this. It matters for something else: reported VFS information says applicants in the UAE must hold a valid UAE residence permit. We could not open that page, so confirm on the VFS site.
Where you file from Dubai
Home Affairs says visitor visa applications are made online by booking a personal appointment at a VFS centre, or in person at a South African mission where no VFS centre exists. Biometrics are taken, and interviews held where necessary, at the mission or centre.
Search results for the VFS South Africa page for the UAE show centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, with the Dubai Consulate General as the visa office. The page itself refused our request, so the opening hours, the service fee and the processing time are not confirmed here. One snippet gave about eight weeks. Treat that as a guide and give yourself more time than you think you need.
We book the slot, prepare the file and check every document. You attend, give your biometrics and collect the passport. Home Affairs and VFS are where you give biometrics, not where you have to figure out the paperwork alone.
The new ETA
South Africa launched its Electronic Travel Authorisation on . The government says it started with China, India, Indonesia and Mexico, and plans to widen it to more countries and later make it compulsory for short stays from visa-required countries. Approved applicants are told to expect the ETA within 24 hours.
If you hold an Indian passport, read the screens on the ETA site before you book a VFS slot. We do not have a fee or an eligibility rule for residents of the UAE, so we do not promise either. Ask us when you are unsure.
Documents to have ready
The VFS checklist sets the exact list, and it changes by purpose of visit. The Home Affairs advisory and general practice point to:
- Passport with enough blank pages and validity past your trip.
- Proof of UAE residence.
- Return or onward ticket and accommodation.
- Proof of funds.
- For children under 18, an unabridged birth certificate showing the parents, plus consent affidavits and ID copies when one or neither parent travels.
The advisory we read is dated , so check the child rules again before you fly.
What goes wrong
- No visa for a passport that needs one. Airlines in Dubai check before boarding.
- Tickets bought before the visa. Eight weeks is a long wait.
- A mixed family with different passports, where one person is exempt and another is not.
- Overstay. Home Affairs can declare an overstayer undesirable for a period, and no visa of any kind is issued meanwhile.
- Trying to change status in the country. A tourism or medical treatment visitor visa cannot be changed while you are there.
How it works with us
Send your passport copy and Emirates ID on WhatsApp or through the form on this page. An adviser checks the exemption list and the ETA for your passport and tells you plainly if you need nothing. If a visa is needed, you get one total price before you pay, we prepare the file, book the VFS slot, and follow up while you wait. DubaiVisaDesk.com is a private visa service. South African authorities decide every visa.
If a visa is refused, South Africa and VFS do not return their fees. Before you pay, your adviser tells you in writing which part of our total, if any, comes back in that case.
