Yes, you can sponsor family on a freelance visa if that visa is a UAE green visa: ICP says green residency covers freelancers and lets holders sponsor family, and u.ae adds first-degree relatives. Golden visa and remote work visa holders can sponsor family too. For a free zone freelance visa that is not green, no official page we read sets the rule.
The word "freelance visa" covers several different things in Dubai, and the family answer depends on which one you hold. So start by finding the name of your own residence on the visa or in the GDRFA app.
Which self-sponsored residents can sponsor family
| Your residence | Who you can sponsor | Where this is written |
|---|---|---|
| Green visa, freelancer or self-employed | Spouse and children; first-degree relatives | ICP green guide and FAQ; u.ae family page |
| Green visa, skilled or investor | Spouse and children; first-degree relatives | ICP green guide; u.ae family page |
| Golden visa | Spouse, children of any age, parents | ICP golden guide |
| Remote work (virtual work) visa | Family members, for the same period as yours | GDRFA virtual work page |
| Free zone freelance visa, not green | Not stated on the official pages we read | none found |

The green visa: the clear case
The UAE green visa has a freelancer and self-employed route. You need a MOHRE freelance or self-employment permit, a degree or specialised diploma, and income of AED 360,000 for the two preceding years or proof of financial solvency. Once you hold it, family sponsorship is part of the package.
Two things come with it that matter for a family:
- 180 days of grace. ICP gives families of green holders 180 days after expiry or cancellation. Families on a standard Dubai residence get 60 days on GDRFA's pages.
- Wider relatives. u.ae says green holders may sponsor first-degree relatives, not only the spouse and children.
Golden and remote work holders
A golden visa holder can sponsor a spouse, children of any age and parents. If the holder dies, the family can stay until their own permits run out. Details are on the golden visa family page.
A remote work visa holder can sponsor family members for the same period as their own visa. That period is one year, renewable. The Dubai remote work visa page covers the income rule.
Free zone freelance visas: what is not stated
Many freelancers in Dubai hold a free zone freelance permit with a residence visa bought as part of the package, for example through GoFreelance, which lists the licence at AED 7,500 a year and the visa separately. These are not green visas unless you applied for one.
Here is where the official record runs thin:
- No GDRFA or ICP page we read states whether this residence can sponsor family.
- The official salary rule (AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation) is written for employees. How a freelancer proves it is not set out.
- Agencies and media say freelancers can sponsor on the same figure. We could not confirm that on an official page.
So we will not tell you it works. Ask GDRFA (or ICP outside Dubai) and your free zone before you plan a move around it. If your income is high enough, getting the green visa first gives you a written rule to rely on.

Documents your family will need
- Passport copy and photo for each person
- Attested marriage certificate; see marriage certificate attestation
- Attested birth certificates for children
- Father's no objection letter if the mother sponsors the children
- Your green, golden or remote work residence copy
- Proof of income: freelance permit and income records, salary certificate, or the remote work salary certificate
- Tenancy contract and a utility bill
- Health insurance for each family member
Steps that apply on every route
- Confirm your own residence type and that it has enough time left. Family visas cannot run past yours.
- Attest the marriage and birth certificates.
- Apply for each family member's entry permit, or the status change if they are already in the UAE.
- Medical for anyone 18 or over, then Emirates ID biometrics.
- Residence issued. GDRFA states 48 hours per stage.
Where family files go wrong
- Applying on a free zone freelance visa without checking the rule first.
- Your own residence close to expiry, so the family visa would be very short.
- Income records that do not match the figures in the application.
- Certificates attested abroad but not by MOFA in the UAE.
For the standard family visa rules that apply to employees, read family visa in Dubai. For every route to sponsoring yourself, see self-sponsored visa UAE.
