UAE golden visa benefits

A golden visa gives you 10 years of residence with no sponsor, no limit on time spent abroad, and the right to bring your spouse, children of any age and parents.

The main UAE golden visa benefits are 10 years of residence with no employer or sponsor, no limit on how long you stay abroad, and family sponsorship that reaches further than a normal visa: your spouse, children of any age and your parents. You can sponsor domestic workers, your family keeps 180 days of grace after expiry, and they may stay on if you die.

Below is what each benefit means in practice, and the limits the official pages attach to them.

Ten years, no sponsor

ICP and GDRFA now issue 10 years; older u.ae text still says 5 for some categories. Either way, the permit is yours. ICP describes it as residence "without the need for a sponsor", with automatic renewal. Compare that with a work visa, which ends when the job ends and must be renewed every time on the employer's file.

The GDRFA renewal pages say the permit renews on the same terms as the first issue. So the conditions still matter at renewal time. See golden visa renewal.

No 180-day rule

A normal UAE residence is cancelled automatically if you stay outside the country for more than 180 consecutive days. GDRFA says golden holders are exempt: the permit is void only if it expires while you are outside. Abu Dhabi's ADRO puts it simply, the holder can stay outside the UAE as long as the residence is valid.

This suits people who split the year between Dubai and home, or who work on long contracts abroad.

Children of any age

On a normal family visa, sons usually have to be under 25 and daughters unmarried. ICP says golden holders can sponsor their children regardless of age. One caution: the DLD property route still asks for an undertaking that sons or daughters over 18 are not married, so expect that form. Full rules on the golden visa for family page.

Parents on your file

ICP lets golden holders sponsor their parents. On the DLD route each parent needs a dependency certificate from your consulate. Students are the exception: a school achiever on a Dubai golden visa can sponsor parents but not siblings. More on the golden visa for parents page.

Domestic workers

ICP allows holders to sponsor domestic workers under the normal UAE rules. The Dubai government's own residency page goes further and speaks of unlimited domestic helpers. No official page states a fee for this. The domestic workers page has the details.

180 days after expiry or cancellation

ICP's renewal and cancellation cards, and the GDRFA golden renewal pages, give holders and their families 180 days of grace. That is time to renew, move to another visa or leave without fines. The general GDRFA cancellation page still prints 60 days for all residence types, so confirm your number on the day you cancel. After the grace period, overstay fines apply, as explained on the UAE overstay fine page.

Your family stays if you die

ICP says that if the golden holder dies, family members may stay in the UAE until their own permits expire. That gives them time to finish a school year, sell a home or set up their own residence.

What sponsoring family costs

Line, DLD property route Amount

How long adding family takes

DLD lists 7 to 10 business days for its route. GDRFA lists 48 hours to 5 days per golden permit, depending on the category. Attesting certificates abroad usually takes longer than the visa.

Limits that come with the benefits

  • Salary route: the permit is cancelled if your salary falls below AED 30,000 or the contract ends.
  • Property route: DLD keeps a lien and you cannot sell for 10 years.
  • Self-support: GDRFA expects you to support yourself and your family without government help.
  • Student permits: GDRFA's issuance page says they are not renewed after expiry, while a separate GDRFA renewal service exists, so ask before you plan on a second term.
  • Health insurance: investors, entrepreneurs and specialised professionals must keep it for the whole family.

Thinking about the green visa instead? It is a five-year route with different rules: see golden visa vs green visa.

How to add family to your golden visa

  1. Get your own golden residence first

The family file opens on your permit, so your residence must be issued before theirs.

  2. Attest the family documents

Marriage and birth certificates from abroad are attested in that country and by MOFA. Parents need a dependency certificate from your consulate.

  3. Buy health insurance for each person

Investors, entrepreneurs and specialised professionals must cover their family members.

  4. File each family member

Add them through GDRFA, ICP or the DLD centre that issued your permit, then do medicals and biometrics.

Questions people ask

What are the benefits of the UAE golden visa for family?

You can sponsor your spouse and your children whatever their age, and your parents. If you die, ICP says your family can stay in the UAE until their own permits expire.

Can I stay outside the UAE for more than 6 months on a golden visa?

Yes. GDRFA says golden holders are exempt from the 180-day stay abroad rule. The permit is void only if it expires while you are outside the country.

Can a golden visa holder sponsor a maid or nanny?

Yes. ICP says holders may sponsor domestic workers under the normal UAE rules and procedures. No official page we checked states a separate fee for this.

What happens when a golden visa expires or is cancelled?

ICP and the GDRFA renewal pages give golden holders and their families 180 days after expiry or cancellation. Note that the general GDRFA cancellation page still says 60 days, so check your own case.

Does the golden visa need an employer or sponsor?

No. ICP describes it as long-term residence without a sponsor, with automatic renewal. You can change jobs or stop working without losing it, except on the skilled professional route, which depends on your salary.

Can I enter the UAE before the golden visa is issued?

Yes. If you apply from abroad, ICP gives you a six-month multiple-entry visa to come and complete the residence, and it can be renewed once for another six months.
